Situated in the heart of fashionable Bermondsey Village, the fantastic building designed by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, was sporting a faded colour scheme of pink, burnt orange, yellow and blue and asked Aspect Construction to carry out a much needed refresh.

Originally built in 1908, the Old School House was principally used to educate the cathedral’s choristers and in its remarkable history, was even used as a refuge during WW2 for junior boys evacuated from St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The school formally closed its doors in 1960 and was then used briefly as corporate office space for the Cornwall Council Unitary Authority, but having been empty for a long period of time it will soon open its doors to the local community.

The run-down building, which has become known as the ‘loo with a view’, had stood empty for several years and was bought for £115,000 by model-turned property developer Charlotte Thomson and her fiancé Joey Auger in March last year.

As any developer knows building on the coast can present a number of challenges, with saltwater, sand, wind and rain leaving new paintwork looking worn and tired after just a few years. Regular repainting can be costly, but there is an alternative, as one South West property company discovered during its latest build.

The original pier was designed by famous architect, George Rennie but vicious storms destroyed this structure. In 1880, a new pier was set up and since then, has managed to survive two world wars and the vagaries of numerous sea storms!

The theatre, which is classed as a touring theatre, is undergoing a radical transformation, with fire precaution a major issue. To this end, the fire-proofing of the wood panelling in the main auditorium used paints and coatings from the Zinsser range to provide not only a decorative finish, but also a long-term protective one.

As part of a rolling initiative to bring the homes up to the Decent Homes Standard, it was decided to address the problem blighting the visual appearance of the estate – with the existing state of the brickwork being a major factor.

Run as a teacher training college, an educational centre and conference centre by Sheffield City Council from 1945, it has been owned privately since 2002 .The extension, designed by architects Chris Gothard Associates, is the first significant building construction to be undertaken for over 100 years. It houses a splendid swimming pool, below-ground gymnasium and beauty rooms. Because of the function of the extension, building contractors Baytree Interiors wanted an internal paint that would be completely moisture permeable resistant and that would not flake or peel.
