Painting over powder coatings is a great way to repair a damaged surface and refresh its appearance. Conventional paint will not adhere to powder coated surfaces, so it’s important to ensure you have the right Zinsser product for the job, sealing any chips or scratches to help extend the coating’s performance and lifespan.
In this article, we’ll walk you through how to properly paint over a powder coat, tackling the issue both indoors and outdoors and ensuring a durable, long-lasting finish.
All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion of the materials to be applied. Remove loose and failing material by scraping or brushing with a stiff bristle brush to a sound edge. Feather sound edges with a fine grade abrasive paper.
Remove all visible signs of organic growth and treat the areas with Zinsser Mould Killer in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to dry.
In areas with remaining sound paint clean down with Zinsser Universal Cleaner & Degreaser to remove any contaminants. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all residues. Allow to dry.
The key to successfully painting over powder-coated metal is priming, and it’s essential to choose a primer specifically designed to bond with challenging surfaces. Prime overall with one full coat of primer-sealer Bulls Eye 1-2-3 in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow a minimum drying time of 1 hour in normal drying conditions.
Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 is highly recommended as the best primer for painting over powder coatings. It adheres exceptionally well to smooth, slick surfaces, providing an ideal foundation for your topcoat.
For interior projects decorate with two full coats of PermaWhite in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow a minimum drying time of two hours between coats.
For exterior projects decorate with two full coats of AllCoat Exterior satin or gloss in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow a minimum drying time of 1 hour between coats.
