How to Paint Fletton Brick

Fletton brick, known for its high porosity, can present significant challenges when it comes to painting. Without proper preparation and priming, paint applied to Fletton brick is prone to cracking and peeling over time due to its inability to adhere effectively to the surface. To ensure a long-lasting, durable finish, it’s essential to use the right primer that seals the brick and creates a stable base for your topcoat. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about painting Fletton brick.

Required Steps

1
Surface Preparation

All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion of the materials to be applied. Remove loose material by scraping or brushing with a stiff bristle brush to a sound edge. Prior to painting, the moisture content should not exceed 12%.

Remove all visible signs of organic growth and treat the areas with a proprietary mould killer and remover in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Allow to dry.

Rake out and re-point any unstable pointing with a suitable cement mix in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to cure.

2
Priming

Patch prime all bare and filled areas with one full coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3® or Zinsser B-I-N® AQUA in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow a minimum drying time of 45 mins for Zinsser B-I-N® AQUA and 1 hour for Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3® in normal drying conditions. Bring forward patch primed areas with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3® or Zinsser B-I-N® AQUA. Allow to dry.

Prime all areas to be decorated with one full coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3® or Zinsser B-I-N® AQUA in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow a minimum drying time of 45 mins for Zinsser B-I-N® AQUA and 1 hour for Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3® in normal drying conditions.

3
Decoration

Decorate with two full coats of AllCoat® Exterior Gloss, Matt or Satin in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow a minimum drying time of 1 hour between coats in normal drying conditions.

FAQs

The surface of Fletton bricks features a textured finish from where the bricks rest against each other in the kiln. Their dense, sometimes shiny nature can lead to poor adhesion with certain paints.
