How to Paint Brickwork

Brickwork forms a durable and versatile surface, but its porous and uneven nature can make achieving a smooth, long-lasting paint finish a challenge. This guide explains how to properly prime brickwork to ensure excellent topcoat adhesion, a crucial step for a successful project.

Required Steps

1
Surface Preparation

All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion of the materials to be applied. Remove loose material by scraping or brushing with a stiff bristle brush to a sound edge. Prior to painting, the moisture content should not exceed 12%.

Treat exterior mould with a proprietary mould killer and remover in accordance with manufacturers instructions.

Rake out and re-point any unstable pointing with a suitable cement mix in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to cure.

2
Priming

Patch prime all bare and filled areas with Bulls Eye® 1-2-3 or B-I-N® AQUA in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and drying times. Bring forward patch primed areas with Bulls Eye® 1-2-3 or B-I-N® AQUA. Allow to dry.

Prime all areas to be decorated with one full coat of Bulls Eye® 1-2-3 or B-I-N® AQUA in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and drying times.

3
Decoration

Decorate with two full coats of AllCoat® Exterior Matt, Satin or Gloss in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow a minimum drying time of 1 hour between coats in normal drying conditions.
