Professional decorator, Clinton Hughes of Spectrum Painting, was faced with mould and mildew in a residential property he was renovating. In the video above you will see the steps he took to remove the mould and ensure it wouldn’t return.
Mould and mildew formed in the aftermath of a water leak in the property. Areas of the home typically prone to high humidity, like the bathroom, kitchen and utility room suffered particularly badly and were in desperate need of mould treatment and prevention.
An increasing problem within properties across the UK, the build up of mould and mildew is often caused by excess moisture within a building usually as a result of poor insulation and insufficient ventilation. This can result in higher humidity levels and condensation.
Most modern building materials can encourage mould growth upon their surfaces which results in unsightly black spores and, when couple with warmth and moisture, will increase the likelihood of mould upon internal walls and ceilings. So, lifestyle is often a contributing factor in the spread of mould.
The cost-of-living crisis has also meant that many households cannot afford to heat their homes and ventilate damp areas, which has led to allergic reactions, asthma attacks, respiratory infections and even deaths.
The first step Clinton took was to properly clean the affected surfaces using Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner, rinsing the areas thoroughly before allowing them to dry.
Next it was a case of simply applying mould killer directly to the affected areas “I used Zinsser Mould Killer & Remover,” says Clinton, “as it fully prepares the mould-stained areas before painting to provide a longer-lasting finish.” See 01.00 in the video above for the correct way to apply.
After allowing it to dry, Clinton applied the groundbreaking water-based primer, sealer and stain-killer B-I-N® AQUA. “What’s great about this product is that it can be used for so many jobs,” says Clinton, “it’s an effective stain-blocker, adheres to the trickiest surfaces and you can even tint it to pastel and mid-tone colours.” See 01.18 in the video for how effectively it covers the mould staining.
The final step was to apply two coats of PermaWhite®, the “holy grail” Zinsser product for mould. As Clinton says, “The mould resistant paint contains a biocide that protects the paint film against fungal degradation, in addition to cracking, peeling and blistering for up to 7 years.”
The tried and trusted solution for mould growth, PermaWhite® actively prevents mould and mildew in high humidity areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms, has a Class 1 Scrub Rating for easy cleaning, and a 30-minute touch-dry time that’s recoatable in 2 hours. And the finished results in the video at 01.40 speak for themselves.
“As a professional decorator of many years, my go-to product for this project would always be Zinsser,” states Clinton, “their products are reliable and trustworthy and have solved any decorating problem I’ve ever come across.”
